FAQ

What is Penship?

Penship is a community for pen pals around the world! We help connect you with friends to write to – whether you want to write to someone online or send each other good ol’ fashioned snail mail

Once you’ve signed up as a member, you’ll be able to create your own profile and message other members. These profiles are a great way to find someone to be pen pals with! Contact someone you’d like to be pen pals with or let the messages come to you 🙂

What is a pen pal?

A pen pal is someone you write back and forth with – usually someone from another country that you’ve never met. You can either write via snail mail (letters and packages sent in the mail) or online (through various social media or email). It’s a fun way to make new friends, learn new languages, and exchange cultures!

Is there any requirements to become a member?

Just one! In order to use Penship you must be at least 13 years old. This is in honour of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). While it only applies to the USA, we think it’s a pretty good law that ensures young internet users stay safe. We do our best to keep Penship as safe as possible, but we can not guarantee it’s safety enough to let our younger friends use our services in good conscience.

If you’re under 13, we recommend talking to a parent, guardian, or teacher about finding someone to be pen pals with!

I want to edit my profile! Where do I go to do that?

Once you’ve logged in, click on “My Account”. Then click “View Profile” or the profile icon. This will lead to your profile. Click on the gear icon at the top right and select “Edit Profile”. Make sure to save your changes when you’re done by clicking the check mark at the top or “Update Profile” button on the bottom of the page!

What should I write in my profile?

It’s up to you! But if you’re at a loss of what to write here are some ideas:

Talk about a day in the life of YOU
Gush about your pets and tell us your favourite story about them
What are your hobbies? Do you collect toy dinosaurs? Paint pictures of leaves using only the colour purple? Or maybe you spend your free time saving the earth one piece of litter at a time! We wanna know!
Write strictly in third person, sometimes it helps
Make a song about your favourite things
Show off an excerpt from your latest fan fic
List off the Top 5 Shows you recommend binge watching
Are you learning any languages? Looking for a study buddy?
Share a secret family recipe for making the world’s yummiest banana bread but spend the first five paragraphs talking about something entirely unrelated

Remember, write what you’re comfortable sharing and go with what feels best. You’re already an interesting, wonderful person and there’s sure to be lots of people out there who like what you have to say. The best way to find a pen pal that’s a good match for you, is to just be yourself!

How do I upload a profile picture?

Currently we’ve only given the ability to upload a profile picture to selected users. If you are one of the lucky few with this ability, an upload button will show in the same place that you edit your profile.

We’re still working on whether this will be available to everyone or not, as having more files uploaded to the site can be costly.

How do I get my profile verified?

Currently we’ve only given the ability to request verification to selected users. If you are one of the lucky few with this ability, you’ll see an option for requesting verification in the same place where you can edit your profile.

Once your verification request has been sent, our team members may ask for further proof of identity before verifying your account.

I found someone I want to be pen pals with. How do I send them a message?

As a member you’ll be able to message other users privately to let them know you want to be pen pals with them. Once you’re signed in you should see a button on their profile to send them a message.

What should I write in my message?

It’s up to you what you want to write in your message! Generally, it’s good to include a bit about yourself and why you want to be their pen pal. Super short messages such as “Hey there” have way more of a chance of being declined/ignored than messages with more effort, so we recommend writing at least 3~5 sentences.

I made a profile! How do I know when someone wants to be my pen pal?

Make sure your private messaging is turned on. This is how other members will be able to contact you! You can find your messages by going to “My Profile” and then clicking “Messages”.

I’m not looking for pen pals anymore, but I might be later on. How do I temporarily remove my post?

Go to your Account and click “Privacy” (lock icon) you can choose to hide your profile so only you can see it. You can change it back when you’re ready.

Why isn’t my profile showing up in the Members page?

Go to your Account and click “Privacy” (lock icon). Make sure your privacy settings are set so that other members can view your profile.

I want to delete my account permanently, how do I do that?

Go to your Account and click “Delete Account” (trash icon). Enter your password to confirm that you’d like to delete your account and click the “Delete Account” button.
