Welcome to Penship!

Hey Everyone!
As some of you know, we’ve undergone a lot of changes over the years and more recently we had to move our services over to Instagram. Well no longer! We’re super excited to introduce you to our new website, created with love for all our friends at Penship.
Of course, we’ve still got a lot of learning and growing to do – and more great services to bring you – so there are sure to be more changes along the way. For now, we hope you like the new look & pen pal system we’ve created for you!

News & Updates

Hey everyone!

It’s already been two weeks since our last update, so we’re back to let you know what our plan is moving forward.

But first, thank you to everyone who took the time to fill out our survey from our last update. We’ve read through each response and discovered a many great ideas, which we’re definitely planning on implementing in the future. For example, there were a few comments about the limitations of the new member list. One important feature of the current website is that you can view anyone’s full description without being redirected to a new page. This makes it much easier to browse and quickly learn more about each member. Making friends shouldn’t be a frustrating experience, so the new design now reveals a user’s full profile when you click on it. Check it out in the following video. It’s still a work in progress, but we hope you enjoy it.

Now for the future of Penship.

We’re currently still developing some major features of the website, such as the messaging and notification system. And once that’s completed, we’ll spend some time to polish up the new design and make sure everything is working as intended. Our current goal is to have the new website live by October 1st, assuming everything goes as planned. Which means you could have a fully customizable Penship profile before the end of the year. We hope you’re as excited about the new avatars as we are!

We also have some big updates in mind for Penship after the new website is available, so you can look forward to hearing more about that in the future.

That’s it for this update. And the next time you hear from us, it will be an announcement to confirm when the new website goes live!

The Penship Team

Hey everyone, we have some exciting news to share with you today.

During the past month we spent a lot of time working on an update for Penship. The current website is built using WordPress, with a long list of plugins for each separate feature. This makes it difficult to add new features or make changes in a short amount of time, because the plugins conflict or aren’t able to be modified. So we rebuilt the website from scratch and improved many of the features that are currently available, including the verification process and profile customization. But before we get into too much detail about what’s in the update, right now we’re hoping to get some feedback about the new design and how it looks.

Here are some screenshots and videos of the new website.

As you can see, there’s a big difference in design between the current website and the new update. So we’d love to hear what you think.

If you’d like to give us feedback, you can click the following button to access our feedback submission form, which should take approximately 1-5 minutes to complete.

We will be reviewing and considering all feedback we receive before making any decisions about the update. So if you’d like to help shape the future of Penship, now is the perfect time. We look forward to hearing from everyone, and we’re excited to see where this update takes us. If you’d like to ask any questions or start a conversation about the update, don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected]

Important update time!

In January, our founder Mika decided that after 10 years of managing Penship through Tumblr, Instagram and now on our very own website, it was finally time to step down and pass the responsibility on to someone else. You may be wondering then; if Mika hasn’t been working on Penship recently, who posted new photos on Instagram this past week? And who’s writing this update now?

Well, it turns out Mika has a secret evil brother she never mentioned. That’s me!

Hi, my name is Matthew. I’m not actually evil, and I’m no longer a secret. But from now on, I’ll be managing and updating all Penship accounts as well as the website, and hopefully making the pen pal finding process much easier and enjoyable for everyone! First of all, I noticed my sister promised profile upgrades to everyone who filled out their profile information by the end of December. I’ll do one better and extend the deadline to the end of this weekend. Anyone who fills out their profile information by Sunday, the 9th of February, will receive an upgrade to their account which allows them to post a profile photo and request verification. There are other features too but I can’t remember them all :”)

We’re also going to be working through a backlog of verification requests that have been sitting in our inbox getting dusty (sorry!). So here’s how the verification process will work if you request it.

  1. When you request verification, we’ll receive an email letting us know.
  2. We will then visit your profile and if everything looks good we’ll send you a message.
  3. You’ll be asked to contact us through Instagram to verify your identity.
  4. Done! Simple as that!

If we still don’t think you’re a human after checking out your Instagram, then you’ve probably got bigger issues to worry about! (And you won’t be verified, but we’ll make sure to let you know how to fix that).

This update is getting a bit long and we know you’ve got letters to write, so we’ll wrap it up…

We have lots of new features in mind to add to the website, but we’re currently too busy to implement them. We’ll let you know when that changes, but for now, you can expect (close to) daily updates to Penship’s Instagram where we’re currently testing out a new way of sharing our favourite mail art. Animations! We would love to hear what you think about them, so please let us know!

Finally, if you’d like to say thanks to Mika for all the hard work she put into making and updating Penship, you can send her a direct message on Instagram. Her profile on this website will still be available, however, she will no longer be accepting messages.

The Penship Team

We will be working on Penship today but you should still be able to access the site! If you run into any issues please be sure to let us know at [email protected]

Also as it’s the month of giving and we’d like to encourage you to fill out your profiles, we’ll be adding some special upgrades (profile photo, higher number of messages allowed per day, ability to request profile verification) for those who have filled out their profile! This is a manual process so please allow time for us to upgrade your profile. Profiles must be filled out by December 31st to be able to receive the special upgrades.

We’re also granting access to a select few for creating Groups. If you’d like to be considered for this, please make sure your profile is filled out and message Mika to let her know you’re interested.
Essentially Groups can be anything you want (within reason). If you want to run a language exchange group, postcard swap group, art group, secret santa, book club, fan fic writing group, etc etc. you absolutely can!

We had a short maintenance today while we updated some of the main functions of Penship. Mostly the update was internal, so you won’t see many changes on Penship, but the Search function has been upgraded a bit! You can now sort the Members page, search by keywords, or use the drop down menus to find the kind of pen pal you’re looking for. If you run into any issues when using Penship please be sure to let us know at [email protected] or via our Contact Us page!
